READY TO BUY YOUR FIRST CAR?

WHAT YOU NEED TO DISPLAY ON YOUR CAR

WHAT SHOULD I HAVE DISPLAYED ON MY CAR?

When you have bought or considering buying a vehicle it will need to have a warrant of fitness that’s current and unexpired to be safely driven on the road. A warrant of fitness is a check-up that sees if your vehicle meets all the safety requirements (kind of like when you go to the doctor for a check-up to make sure you don’t have any medical issues). When you get a warrant of fitness it shows that your vehicle is safe enough to drive on the road.

You’ll also need a rego (vehicle license) when you want to use a vehicle on public roads. To get a rego you’ll have to pay a fee for the vehicle license. It is your responsibility to make sure the vehicle has a current rego as a registered person on the motor vehicle register. If you have an exemption from this, you won’t be able to drive the vehicle on the roads. If you don’t have a warrant of fitness and a rego you can be fined $200 for each or $400 for both, so it’s important that they’re kept all up to date. The fees for getting a rego for your vehicle can be found here.

These will need to be displayed on your vehicle too in an upright and visible position that doesn’t obscure your view of the road. For your rego, you’ll need to display it on the left side of your windscreen or if you’re driving a moped or motorcycle it’ll need to be placed near your number plate.

Don’t forget! You’ll also need to also display L plates at the front and rear of your vehicle if you’re on your learner’s license!
