MODIFICATIONS ARE COOL IF DONE THE RIGHT WAY

You might also want some sick modifications to your car to make it look aesthetically pleasing. But there are some rules in place about modifications, so make sure you read up on them before you decide to modify. Keep in mind, modifying vehicles can cost a lot of money very quickly, especially if you need to replace modified parts, so sometimes it’s best to just keep your vehicle how it is when you’re just starting out on the roads.

YOU MAY NEED AN LVV CERT

One of the big things about car modifications is getting your LVV certificate to show that your modifications are roadworthy. An LVV certifier will check your modifications and will give you an LVV certification plate if the vehicle meets the standards for certification. If not, you won’t be able to legally drive your modified car on the road. You’ll need to have this plate on your vehicle all the time so officers know that the modifications are legal if required. The rules for modifications depend on the government and what they say about your particular modification. To view the full list of things you can and can’t modify see here. Some modifications may be legal here in New Zealand but not in other countries, so it’s important to check the government websites before you spend money modifying so you’ll legally be able to drive your vehicle.

If you want the personalised number plates that the vehicle you bought has, you need to make a transfer agreement with the seller. This way the numberplate will legally be yours rather than the previous sellers. If the seller doesn’t agree to this, you won’t be able to own the vehicle with personalised plates.
